President Obama Pays Tribute to Special Forces Unit in bin Laden Raid
With his job approval ratings up and even Republican critics congratulating him for the bin Laden operation, Obama paid tribute to the elite military team in a secrecy-shrouded meeting at Fort Campbell five days after announcing the al Qaeda leader was dead.
The president is visiting the Fort Campbell army base in the state of Kentucky to personally thank participants in the early Monday raid on bin Laden's compound. Administration officials said Mr. Obama will privately meet with the participants before making public remarks.
Although Fort Campbell is home to the only air assault division in the military, the White House would not say if Obama was meeting specifically with pilots of the helicopters that brought the Navy SEALs in for the raid, or if the SEALs themselves flew to Kentucky for the event.
