That's what the Brewers did Tuesday night when manager Ken Macha had closer John Axford intentionally walk Pujols in the eighth inning to put the potential winning run on base. Some managers draw the line at making that gamble, but Macha had a succinct answer when asked if it made him nervous.
"No," said Macha. "Pujols has been on fire."
St. Louis — Veteran reserve infielder Craig Counsell, who reportedly has cleared waivers, said Tuesday he would be open to a trade to a contending club.
ESPN's Buster Olney reported Monday that Counsell was among the players who have cleared waivers. After July 31, a player must clear waivers to be traded, unless a deal is worked out with a claiming team.
