But Piniella's Cubs never have been this far underwater to start a second half, and it seems as if only a tsumani could lift their boat.

''I'd like to see us get off to a great start,'' general manager Jim Hendry said Thursday as the second half began with a 12-6 slugfest over the Philadelphia Phillies. ''You never know how you're going to come out of the gate. ...
