New York Mets defeat Chicago Cubs, 6-1
A taxing weekend in St. Louis had all the makings for a disaster when the Mets returned to Flushing to begin a 10-game home stand Monday night, coming off their 20-inning marathon Saturday and Sunday's late-night start.
But any signs of lethargy were extinguished when rookie lefthander Jon Niese pitched 5-2/3 quality innings and center fielder Angel Pagan socked a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning, part of a five-run frame that iced the 6-1 victory.
It was a better vibe and a better result Monday night at Citi Field.
The Mets and their fans got a jolt of energy even before Monday night’s game against the Cubs with news of the call-up of prized minor league prospect Ike Davis. Then Davis, Angel Pagan and Jason Bay converted it into victory by keying a five-run seventh as the Mets prevailed 6-1 before 27,940.
