Cincinnati Reds defeat St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4
If the Cardinals intended to test Cincinnati Reds left fielder Jonny Gomes Tuesday night, then this just in: Gomes aced the quiz.
Trying to "push" their way out of an early four-run deficit, the Cardinals managed 10 hits in six innings against Reds starting pitcher Justin Lehr. Unfortunately for a team that saw its four-game win streak extinguished, the Cardinals also took two base-running gambles in which catcher Yadier Molina challenged Gomes.
The last time righthanded rookie Mitchell Boggs came up from Class AAA Memphis to make a spot start for the Cardinals, he was sent back to Memphis the next day. But he still was here in the clubhouse tonight and manager Tony La Russa said, "If he goes down, he's down for 10 days. We don't want to that to happen."
