New York Mets defeat Houston Astros, 8-3

HOUSTON - Livan Hernandez had so much trouble in the first inning that Jerry Manuel ordered Tim Redding to warm up in the Mets bullpen, and was within two batters of pulling his starting pitcher.

Then the Astros decided to run themselves out of a frame in which they could have delivered a knockout punch. Bailed out, Hernandez recovered to add six scoreless innings as the Mets beat Houston Sunday, 8-3.
