Colorado Rockies defeat St. Louis Cardinals, 11-4
Rookie reliever Jason Motte of the St. Louis Cardinals had made it through the first two months of the season without allowing an inherited runner to score out of 12 runners who had been on base when he entered a game.
In one fell swoop, Motte maxed out a trifecta in the seventh inning of Friday's game. Three runners inherited, three runners scored as the Cardinals lost to Colorado. 11-4.
"That's usually how it goes," said Motte, smiling, this afternoon.
A Cardinals pitching staff that had issued the fewest walks in the National League took a long walk on the wild side in the seventh inning Friday night. Issuing four walks in a span of five hitters, the Cardinals wound up being scorched for nine runs in the inning by the Colorado Rockies, who entered the game with the second worst record in the National League but who walked away with a one-sided 11-4 triumph.
