Pittsburgh Pirates defeat New York Mets, 11-6

PITTSBURGH - Carlos Beltran spent most of the week dealing with a stomach virus that kept him out of the Mets' lineup.

But yesterday's 11-6 loss that completed a three-game sweep at the hands of the lowly Pirates really made the normally reserved Met center fielder sick.

PITTSBURGH - J.J. Putz "hurt like hell" following through on pitches during yesterday's 11-6 loss to the Pirates, so the reliever appears headed for surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. Putz planned to accompany the Mets on their flight to Washington, then travel to New York for an exam today.

"I don't want to say anything until the doctor gives me what his direction would be," Putz said.
