Northeastern defeats Boston College, 6-1

On college hockey This was one Groundhog Day that had Northeastern's long-skittish, oft-disappointed fans particularly worried.

What if the Huskies saw their shadow yesterday and retreated to their subterranean kennel on Huntington Ave. again for the rest of the winter? What if the Garden's bright lights and all that noise spooked them? Was it going to take another two decades for the Year of the Hound?

It may yet. All Northeastern's hockey team has to do now is defe...

Heading into last year's Beanpot tournament, Boston College was cruising along at a pretty good clip with a 12-6-7 record. The Eagles went on to win 13 of their last 19 games (including the Beanpot title), and ended the season with nine straight victories and a national championship.

Tonight, BC enters its Beanpot opener at TD Banknorth Garden at 11-8-4, unbeaten in three games (2-0-1) since returning from holiday break. However, the tournament buzz surrounds Hockey Eas...

COLLEGE HOCKEY NOTEBOOK

Just before the press conference after the tight opening game of the Beanpot Monday between Harvard and Boston University, a media member asked, "Wouldn't it be funny if the second game turned out to be the one that is the blowout?"

That's exactly what happened, as Northeastern rolled over defending national champion Boston College, 6-1. The Eagles outshot the Huskies, 46-27, but went 0 for 7 on the power play.

Matt Price scored BC's goal, ...

But now that NU is off to its best start (17-6-2) since 1981-82, the buzz on Huntington Avenue is at a dog-whistle pitch. In the Year of the Ox, could this, finally, be the Year of the Hound?

"If I had a dollar for every time somebody asked me when we were going to win the Beanpot, my po...

Northeastern University senior Ryan Ginand (inset) of Milford, who scored his team's first goal in Monday's 6-1 Beanpot semifinal win against Boston College, is the Huskies' career Beanpot scoring leader among active players.

But owning that record would pale in comparison to holding the Beanpot Trophy aloft tomorrow night, if the Huskies can knock off Boston University, ranked second in the nation, in the final.

Northeastern, the nation's third-ranked team, hasn't ...

The Beanpot has often been called the social event of the winter season in Boston. The college hockey showcase takes place on the first two Mondays in February, is one of the hardest tickets to land, and the victor claims bragging rights for a year. The 57th annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament takes center stage tomorrow at TD Banknorth Garden, when Harvard meets Boston University (5 p.m.) and defending champion Boston College plays Northeastern at 8. Eight players from the a...

This is a hungry Northeastern team. The third-ranked Huskies, for so long the fourth team in the Beanpot, are contenders this year and they proved it with panache last night as they dropped defending champion Boston College, 6-1, in the second game of the first round at TD Banknorth Garden.

Northeastern (18-6-2, 13-4-1 Hockey East) flattened No. 12 BC (11-9-4, 7-7-4) - despite being outshot, 46-27 - by transforming turnovers into goals. After scoring three times in the ...
