Sierra Club endorses Alexi Giannoulias for IL US Senate

Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Alexi Giannoulias for U.S. Senator in the February 2nd Democratic primary election.

"Alexi Giannoulias is the best choice to represent the interest every Illinois citizen has in a healthy environment and the transition to a clean energy economy," said Jack Darin, Director of the Sierra Club, Illinois Chapter. “As our Treasurer, Giannoulias has been a key leader in developing new environmental programs that helped clean the air and grow clean businesses, and as our Senator he will stand up to the special interests to protect the water we drink and the air we breathe.”

As State Treasurer, Giannoulias initiated new environmental programs in the office, including a very popular $1,000 rebate program for purchases of hybrid cars, and new support programs for renewable energy and energy conservation investments.

In addition to his record of innovation in the Treasurer’s office, Sierra Club cited Giannoulias’ experience in the financial industry as a powerful asset for growing the clean energy economy.

“As Treasurer, Giannoulias learned first hand that establishing a level playing field that allows the most innovative companies to deploy clean energy on a large scale is the best and fastest way to create good, high-paying jobs in the industries of the future, while clearing the air of dangerous pollution,” said Darin. “His environmental commitment and financial expertise make him uniquely qualified to champion policies that help finance clean energy solutions.”

"I'm honored to earn the support of the almost 30,000 members of the Illinois Sierra Club," Giannoulias said. "They know that the way to move this country forward from the failed policies of the past is by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, protecting our environment and transforming our economy into one powered by clean energy.”
