New York Yankees defeat Baltimore Orioles, 5-3

With their ace facing a pitcher who hadn't been on a major league mound in more than 500 days, the Orioles were in prime position last night to win one against an unusually mortal New York Yankees team.

Velma Greene will return tomorrow to her job teaching math at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church, Va., and she'll have quite a story to tell.

Greene, 48, was designated last night as the 100 millionth person to attend a game in Orioles' franchise history. Trembley ejected: : Orioles manager Dave Trembley was ejected after the second inning, arguing a reversal of a call that originally had Melvin Mora on second base rather than striking out. Mora had swung through a pitch that appeared to hit the dirt before bouncing into catcher Ivan Rodriguez's glove. Rodriguez didn't tag Mora, who eventually started running. But crew chief Joe West ruled that Mora had abandoned his chance to get on base by walking toward the dugout.
