St. Louis Cardinals defeat Boston Red Sox, 5-4

BOSTON --Kyle Lohse won his sixth straight start and the St. Louis Cardinals hit three homers to beat the Red Sox 5-4 Friday night in their first game in Boston since Curt Schilling's "bloody sock" victory in the 2004 World Series.

The Red Sox cut the lead to one run on Mike Lowell's two-out RBI single in the ninth off Ryan Franklin, but Kevin Youkilis flied out to right with runners at first and third as Franklin got his 10th save.

The fans had waited nearly an hour last night when out of the garage in Fenway Park's center field sprinted the Celtics, the sopping, rain-soaked Celtics. Perhaps the shower that accompanied the celebration of their NBA Finals win was what caused the ceremonial first pitch from Paul Pierce to Jason Varitek to go so far awry. Fortunately, the Red Sox captain managed to avoid a wrenched neck, despite lunging and missing Pierce's throw.
