Boston College defeats Harvard, 6-5

On hockey You can't even put the trophy in the oven and bake beans in it.

If you venture past Route 495, people think you're talking about some quaint dinner from the 18th century. There are more significant championships than this one, Boston College coach Jerry York was saying. But if you haven't won the Beanpot very often and you live here, it's the holy grail.

The Eagles have a bigger title to play for - the national crown that has eluded them the past two years....

56th BEANPOT

Boston College needed overtime to beat archrival Boston University in the Beanpot semifinals last Monday. Last night, the Eagles needed the extra session again as they got a goal from freshman defenseman Nick Petrecki - his second of the night and of his collegiate career - to beat Harvard, 6-5, and capture the Beanpot title in front of a sellout crowd of 17,565 at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Petrecki scored on the rebound of a Pat Gannon shot, beating soph...

The last time Harvard won the Beanpot, goaltender Kyle Richter was a few months shy of his seventh birthday. When the Crimson take on Boston College in tonight's championship game at TD Banknorth Garden, the sophomore will try to give his school its first title since 1993.

Last Monday night, Richter made 18 saves as Harvard scored three times in the first 7 minutes 2 seconds and beat Northeastern, 3-1, in a semifinal contest.

When Harvard went into the semifinal of the Beanpot against Northeastern last Monday at TD Banknorth Garden, many hockey fans predicted it would be the Huskies' year to shine.

Instead, it was the Crimson's. Harvard, which had only one victory in 11 games (1-8-2) heading into the NU contest, started fast - scoring three times in the first 7 minutes 2 seconds - and won, 3-1. Coach Ted Donato said his team was very prepared and it showed.

"Any time you play well against...

BEANPOT NOTEBOOK

When the tournament Most Valuable Player award was announced last night, Boston College freshman Nick Petrecki heard the words "with two goals" and prepared to make his way to the trophy. Coach Jerry York joked that they had to hold the defenseman back, because it was his fellow rookie - forward Brian Gibbons - who walked away with the hardware following the Eagles' 6-5 overtime victory.

Gibbons also had two goals, although it was the big, bruising P...

56th Beanpot

Never has he known the reward to be anywhere but beneath the surface, reachable only with a relentless commitment. Always has Benn Ferriero pushed forward with the simplest of beliefs.

"You get what you dig," he said.
That thought is carried to the soft sand of the Essex River at low tide, but so, too, is it easily transferred to those backyard workouts at his Essex home. Whether digging for clams or digging for pucks in the corner, Ferriero shapes his ...

Although Boston College captured the 56th Beanpot championship with a 6-5 overtime win over Harvard Monday night, it's likely the Crimson will be every bit as much buoyed by their performance as the high-scoring Eagles were by theirs.

As the stretch run in college hockey begins, Harvard has turned a midseason struggle into a jumping-off point. The Crimson have won three of five after an 0-7-2 stretch. Next up is a pair of home games against Princeton and Quinnipiac this...

He has the out-of-state address and the national and international hockey resume, but there was never any need to enroll Nick Petrecki into the "Intro to Beanpot 101" class upon his arrival at The Heights.

Heck, he qualifies as a veritable Beanpot junkie.

"I was there at the Beanpot the last year it was held at the old [Boston] Garden," said the BC freshman defenseman, and yes, a scowl appeared on his face. That's because Boston University beat Boston College that Fe...
