FDA Approves Merck's Janumet
JANUMET is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with both sitagliptin and metformin is appropriate.
Merck & Co., Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved JANUMET™, the first and only tablet combining a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, sitagliptin (also known as JANUVIA™), and metformin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
JANUMET has been approved, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in patients with type 2 diabetes who are not adequately controlled on metformin or sitagliptin alone, or in patients already being treated with the combination of sitagliptin and metformin. JANUMET should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Janumet is an oral diabetes medicines that help control blood sugar levels.
Metformin works by decreasing glucose (sugar) production in the liver and decreasing absorption of glucose by the intestines.
Sitagliptin works by regulating the levels of insulin your body produces after eating.
Janumet is for people with type 2 diabetes who do not use daily insulin injections. It is used along with diet and exercise. Janumet is not for treating type 1 diabetes.
This combination medication is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes). This product is used when one medication (metformin or sitagliptin) is not controlling your diabetes or when you are taking both metformin and sitagliptin and this product provides the best dose combination for you.
This product contains 2 medications. Sitagliptin works by increasing levels of natural substances called incretins. Incretins help to control blood sugar by increasing insulin release, especially after a meal. They also decrease the amount of sugar your liver makes. Metformin works by helping to restore your body's proper response to the insulin you naturally produce. It also decreases the amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb.
