Boston University defeats Boston College, 2-1

The two-handed slam to the face that he took courtesy of Boston University defenseman Tom Morrow in the second period?

It didn't register.

The runaway locomotive named Sean Sullivan who rocked him at the blue line and nearly sent him onto Causeway Street in the third? No worries.

But the view from his seat on the bench just 5:06 into overtime? The pain was unbearable for Nathan Gerbe.

"Absolutely nothing at all compares to that. It was awful, because I thought we ...

Unwittingly, he had let something get past him. Intuitively, Cory Schneider knew what that meant.

He had to look ahead.

"We've got two [games] with Maine, and they're not going to feel bad for us," said the Boston College goaltender late Monday night as he stood outside a locker room at TD Banknorth Garden. The bitter 2-1 overtime defeat to archrival Boston University in the 55th Beanpot championship was only a half-hour old, there were red-and-white...

The last time the championship game of the Beanpot tournament went into overtime was just two years ago. In the end, Boston University emerged with a victory over Northeastern.

Last night, the title game went into the extra session again, this time with BU and Boston College tied at 1-1 before a sold-out crowd of 17,565 at the TD Banknorth Garden. The Terriers got their goal early in the contest and the Eagles pulled even early in the third, sending it past regulation.

If you were worried the Boston College and Boston University goaltenders wouldn't be good and warmed up for tonight's Beanpot championship game at TD Banknorth Garden, you needn't have been.

Friday night, in the teams' only games of the weekend, the Eagles' Cory Schneider turned back all but one of the 46 shots he faced in a 2-1 victory at Providence. The Terriers were also on the road, at UMass, and John Curry had 32 saves in a 3-2 win.

Although both teams have been...

Boston University goaltender John Curry enters tonight's Beanpot championship against Boston College with a perfect career record in the tournament.

Curry, a senior, is 4-0 with a 1.65 goals-against average and .943 save percentage.

BC netminder Cory Schneider has had success in the tourney, too.

Last year, Schneider was the recipient of the Beanpot's Eberly Award, given to the goalie with the best save percentage in the two games. He turned back...

Say what you will about same-old-same-old with regard to Boston University and Boston College facing each other in the Beanpot championship for the umpteenth time, but there is no arguing with their consistent success.

The Terriers, in particular, have won 27 titles in the tournament's 54 years to 13 for the Eagles. BU has captured the last two and 11 of the last 13. Its only losses were to BC in 2001 and 2004.

BC has the edge in head-to-head play th...

His Boston University teammates knew that if they were going to win this pot of beans for a 28th time, their scarlet-robed guardian angel would have to be his usual miserly February self. John Curry is more reliable than Punxsutawney Phil at this time of year, and last night he sprawled, scrambled, and stifled for 60 minutes and more until his mates finally eked out a 2-1 victory over Boston College.

"John Curry was absolutely immense tonight," said coach Jack Parker, a...

It was his 34th Beanpot tournament, so you could certainly forgive Boston University coach Jack Parker for not being able to remember them all by heart. But last night, the Terriers captured the 20th Beanpot in Parker's storied tenure with a 2-1 overtime win over Boston College.

It was more of a nailbiter for Parker given that his friend and rival coach Jerry York's team played better for stretches, especially late, but Brian McGuirk's tally at 5:06 ...

Boston University junior Brian McGuirk picked an opportune time to score his first goal of the season.

After John McCarthy won a faceoff from BC's Dan Bertram in the right circle in the Boston College zone, McGuirk snapped a shot over the glove of Eagles netminder Cory Schneider at 5:06 of overtime last night, lifting the Terriers to a 2-1 victory and the Beanpot championship at the TD Banknorth Garden.

It marks the 28th title for the Terriers in the 55-year history ...
