Mercedes-Benz W216 is First Produced

The new model was officially unveiled at the end of June 2006 and was presented at the 2006 Paris Salon.

The W216 is offered in five models, the V8-powered CL500 and CL500 4MATIC, the high-performance V8-powered CL63 AMG and the high-end V12-powered CL600 and CL65AMG . The CL500 4MATIC is sold as the CL550 4MATIC in North America. The class is based on the chassis of the W221 S-Class. The two-door coupe weighs 2,045 kg (4,508 lb) and like its predecessors, has no B-pillar interrupting the sleek curve of the side windows. The C216 makes use of the Distronic Plus cruise control, which debuted on the 2007 S-Class. This system is able to bring the car to a complete stop, and accelerate again to the pre-set speed, to keep a pre-set distance away from the car ahead of it. This Mercedes-Benz CL has also debuted with the new Active NightVision program that enables drivers to view the conditions in front of the car despite the dark surroundings. As of the 2009 model year, Mercedes-Benz offers the CL550 in only 4Matic, while the CL600, CL63 AMG, and CL65 AMG are in rear-wheel drive.
In 2007, 40 C216 CL65 AMG units have been sold as '40th Anniversary Edition', to celebrate AMG was founded 40 years earlier, including one sold to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Performancewise, the '40th Anniversary Edition' was a custom CL65 AMG. Changes to the car included an 'ONE OUT OF 40' badge near the COMAND controller, special upholstery and rooflining, and a special 'AMG Alubeam' paintfinish. Apart from the CL65 AMG '40th Anniversary Edition', only a small selection of showcars got an Alubeam finish, a special paint designed to gleam like liquid metal.

The Mercedes-Benz C216 is the new platform for the grand tourer Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. It will be replacing the C215 platform. The new platform was presented at the 2006 Mondial de l'Automobile. The first right-handed drive model presented at the 28th Bangkok International Motor Show.

The CL 63 debuted at the Paris Motor Show on September 13, 2006. It features a 6.2 liter AMG V8, the CL 63 AMG is rated at 386 kW (525 hp) and 630 Newton metres of peak torque, resulting in a 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds (according to Mercedes-Benz) and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
As of 2009, Mercedes-Benz will only be offering the CL550 in 4Matic, as a strategy to increase sales in snowy regions. While all the systems are the same, the suspension has been degraded from ABC to Airmatic, as 4Matic is not compatible with ABC. The CL600, CL63 AMG, and CL65 AMG will remain the same rear-wheel drive variants. The CL-Class can be seen as an "S-Class Coupe". Although it doesn't share the same name, it has many cosmetic similarities. In 2009 the first photos of camouflaged facelifted CL's emerged. The series is expected to be renamed to S Coupe, the same way as the CLK was renamed to E Coupe and E Cabriolet.

At the launch of the CL65 AMG, a special 40th Anniversary Edition was released in a 40-units limited series. While having the same performances and looks as the CL65, the 40th Anniversary Edition was finished in the expensive special paint known as Alubeam. This paint was, untill then, only seen on several conceptcars, such as the Vision GST and the SL400 CDI. In 2009 it was confirmed to be available on the SLS-AMG at a price of around $10.000. The 40th Anniversary Edition was released to celebrate the 40th birthday of AMG.
