Boston Red Sox defeat Texas Rangers, 5-4

It's very easy to understand the problem with the Red Sox bullpen.

It's inconsistent. And the issues were never more evident than in yesterday's doubleheader against the Texas Rangers.

The difference between yesterday and May 28, 1998 was that Brent Mayne was due up after Buck Showalter, then managing the Diamondbacks, walked Barry Bonds with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of ninth in an 8-6 game.

Mayne lined to right on a 3-2 count and Arizona won.

Showalter looked like a genius.

In yesterday's first game, David Ortiz -- another power-hitting lefthander -- came up with runners at first and second and Manny Ramírez on-deck.
