Chicago White Sox defeat Boston Red Sox, 14-2
CHICAGO -- The first bad thing to happen to the Red Sox yesterday was when Matt Clement hit White Sox leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik with a pitch.
It got worse in a 14-2 thrashing by Chicago.
Podsednik stole third base in the five-run first and scored the first run on a fielder's choice. The speedy left fielder also singled in the second and blasted a three-run homer in the sixth. Not a bad day's work.

CHICAGO -- It must have felt like a road to perdition, that walk, from the mound to the dugout, the scoreboard behind Matt Clement reading 8-2 in the White Sox half of the fourth inning, 40,717 Chicagoans serenading the former Cub with a rhythmic, thunderous ''Goodbye" chant.
And, if the words of two teammates -- Johnny Damon and David Ortiz -- are any indicator, the dugout that Clement entered was anything but a safe haven.

Red Sox pitcher Matt Clement would like to believe that. He wants to isolate the personal nightmare that unfolded yesterday in his former home city in Game 1 of the American League Division Series, the biggest game of his life.
He would like to dismiss the eight runs in 3 1/3 innings as an aberration.
But even he must realize the rest of us can no longer do that.
