Boston University defeats Northeastern, 5-3

Thunderous roars still were echoing through the FleetCenter late Monday night when Mike Pandolfo, his arms embracing the coveted Beanpot trophy, made his way toward the interview room.

The Boston University cocaptain didn't mind the wait for questions; the other weight was a problem, though.

"This thing is heavy," he said as he placed the trophy on a table.

The comment drew a few laughs, but no one could question the senior forward from Burlington.

Six of the 12 finalists for the Walter Brown Award - given annually to the top American-born player in New England collegiate hockey - were involved in this year's classic. They are Eaves and Voce for BC; Jim Fahey and Mike Ryan for NU; Mike Pandolfo for BU; and Peter Capouch for Harvard . . . Mazzoleni is now 1-5 in the Beanpot, though it should be noted that only one Crimson coach - the legendary Cooney Weiland - ever has had a winning record in this event. Yes, even Bil...

Two hot teams and one hot ticket - that's the scenario when Boston University and Northeastern face off tonight at the FleetCenter for the Beanpot Tournament's Golden Anniversary championship.

"There's no question it's become a very hot ticket," said BU coach Jack Parker, who played on three Beanpot winners at BU and will be behind the Terriers bench for his 29th Beanpot tonight. "It's amazing this year with Northeastern and BU in the final, it's as hot a ticket as I've...

In this corner, wearing scarlet and white, the Boston University Terriers - winners of 23 Beanpot championships, runner-up in 17 more, and a champion nine times since 1990.

And in this corner, the team with the canine on its jerseys, the Northeastern Huskies - a team that hasn't won a Beanpot title since 1988, but one that beat BU the last time they met this season, 3-0, and has been bested just once (in overtime, against the Univer sity of Massachusetts) in its last ni...

The Northeastern players were still trying to absorb the ambush when they got struck from behind.

The Huskies had just captured the Beanpot disconsolation prize, dissipating a one-goal lead after two periods in a 5-3 loss to Boston University, and now they formed a picket fence of misery. Their souls were as black as their uniforms. Their moods were bluer than the FleetCenter line at which their downcast eyes stared. Victimized after coming within 72 seconds of improbab...

Jack Parker never saw the goal.

"I was looking down the bench, trying to decide on our next shift," said the Boston University coach of what transpired just before winger Justin Maiser went top shelf to win the Terriers' 24th Beanpot title last night at the FleetCenter.

Thanks to tournament MVP Maiser's finish of a great hustle job by linemates Kenny Magowan and David Klema, Parker didn't have to ponder any line changes until the puck was dropped at center ice with 1...

They had it in their grasp, only to see it slip away in a flurry of second-period penalties.

But the grip is oh so familiar, which explains the third-period dramatics that enabled Boston University to hoist the fabled Beanpot trophy for the 24th time in 50 tries. From a 2-0 lead to a 3-2 deficit, the Terriers rode a roller coaster of momentum that culminated with a 5-3 win over Northeastern before 17,565 at the FleetCenter last night.

It was BU's seventh title in eig...
