Mark O'Meara wins the 62nd Masters

Mark O'Meara won his first major championship with a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to defeat David Duval and Fred Couples by one stroke.

O'Meara's victory came in his 15th attempt setting a record for appearances at Augusta before a victory. He had previously been considered one of the best players to never win a major. Later in 1998, he would win the Open Championship on his way to receiving PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.
