FDA Approves Pharmacia and UpJohn's Glyset
Treating type 2 diabetes in adults whose diabetes cannot be managed with diet alone.
Glyset may be used alone, in combination with other oral diabetes medicines, or with insulin.
Acarbose is a glucosidase inhibitor. It works by slowing down the enzyme that turns carbohydrates into glucose. This decreases blood sugar levels following a meal.
GLYSET is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Glyset is used as an add-on treatment to diet to improve high blood sugar levels caused by type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glyset may also be used in combination with a sulfonylurea (such as Glipizide, Glimepiride, or Glyburide) when diet plus either Glyset or a sulfonylurea alone do not result in adequate blood sugar control.
Glyset has been approved for the treatment of Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
