Attempted assassination of Hasan al-Alfi
Two members of Ayman al-Zawahiri's al-Jihad exploded a bomb-laden motorcycle next to the car of Egyptian Interior Minister Hasan al-Alfi's car.
The attack was an utter failure, resulting in only a broken arm for the minister and thedeaths of both bombers.
This method of attack, know as "martyrdom operations" (page 211) to al-Qaeda, marked the first known occasion of Sunni Muslims employing suicide bombers. A Shiite bomber had been responsible for the 1983 attacks on the American embassy and marine barracks in Beirut but this strategy had not been employed by Sunni's until this attack. It is regarded as expressly forbidden in Islam to commit suicide, under any circumstances.
O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.”— Surat An-Nisa 4:29
