Tom Kite wins the 92nd U.S. Open
Tom Kite won his first, and only, major championship by two strokes over Jeff Sluman.
Prior to this event, Kite - who was the PGA Tour's all time money leader - had been known as the "best golfer to never win a major."
Gil Morgan became the first golfer to ever reach double digits under par in the U.S. Open when he birdied the third hole in the third round. He eventually reached -12 by the seventh hole before he began to struggle and fell out of contention.
