The Gulf War Begins

The origins of the Gulf War began many years before the US officially declared it early in 1991.

Iraq and Kuwait had tensions that traced back to the 1930s, and the two countries had been at war since Iraq had bombed Kuwait City in August 1990.

On January 16, 1991, the President George H. W. Bush announced to the country that the US had invaded Iraq to eliminate Saddam Hussein's influence. Troops from more than 34 countries formed a coalition against Iraq in defense of Kuwait. The announcement came months after negotiations had failed with Hussein.
