USS Pampero Is Launched
USS Pampero (1853) was a large (1,375-ton) and capacious ship-rigged vessel purchased by the Union Navy during the American Civil War.
She was used by the Navy as a storeship to provision the fleet and as a collier to supply the fleet’s need for coal for their steam engines.
She served in, and supplied, several blockades, including those Union ships in the Gulf of Mexico which were patrolling off various Gulf ports of the Confederate States of America.
The American Civil War (1861–1865), also known as the War Between the States and several other names, was a civil war in the United States of America. Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the U.S. and formed the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy). Led by Jefferson Davis, they fought against the U.S. federal government (the Union), which was supported by all the free states and the five border slave states in the north.
