Toronto Maple Leafs win Stanley Cup

The Toronto Maple Leafs finished the regular season in fourth place in 1948-49, earning 22 wins?just one more than fifth place Chicago. In the opening round of the playoffs, the Leafs met Boston, while first-place Detroit played Montreal. Toronto eliminated the Bruins in five games, while the Red Wings won their series four games to three. The final pitted the previous season's Cup winner against the regular season's first place team. It looked like it was going to be quite a series. But surprisingly, Toronto won the series in four straight games to win the Stanley Cup. Netminder Turk Broda of the Leafs was the story of the finals, allowing but five goals for a 1.16 goals-against average. It was a dynastic era for the Leafs, who not only had earned their third straight Cup, but the fifth of the decade. The Maple Leafs were the first team to win three consecutive championships since the Ottawa Silver Seven accomplished the feat at the turn of the century.
