Occupy Oakland Protesters Forcibly Dispersed by Police Tear Gas

"I think the police brutality drew a lot of people out of the hills and into the streets," said Josh Chavanne, 29, a freelance Web designer from Oakland. "There is nothing like a little inhumanity to turn on people's humanity."

The Occupy Oakland campsite that continued to grow outside of Oakland City Hall got a few new visitors Wednesday: the Alameda County Health Department.

County health officials said the city had asked them to take a look. Also, the department reported a few concerned calls from residents.

Police fired tear gas at least five times Tuesday night into a crowd of several hundred protesters backing the Occupy movement who unsuccessfully tried to retake an encampment outside Oakland City Hall that officers had cleared away more than 12 hours earlier.
