SS Harriet Tubman Launched
The SS Harriet Tubman (Hull Number 3032) was a Liberty ship built in the United States during World War II. She was named after Harriet Tubman, an African-American freedom fighter during the American Civil War.
The ship was laid down on 19 April 1944, then launched on 3 June 1944. The ship survived the war only to suffer the same fate as nearly all other Liberty ships that survived did; she was scrapped in 1972.
In 1944, the United States Maritime Commission launched the SS Harriet Tubman, its first Liberty ship ever named for a black woman.
In June, 1944, the United States navy launched a Liberty Ship called the S.S. Harriet Tubman, one of the very few to be named after an African American.
