As early as 1749 this painting was described as a portrait of Rembrandt and his wife Saskia. The young lady looking over her shoulder resembles a silverpoint portrait that Rembrandt drew of Saskia. The smiling man as Rembrandt is less convincing, but it should be noted that the face is abraded and has been retouched.
